Nandankanan Zoological Park is one of India's most famous and premier large zoos, the animal park being established on 29th December, 1960.
With close to 250 enclosures including around 100 open moated enclosures, the 400-hectare zoological park houses close to 200 species, including mammals, reptiles, amphibians and avian species. It is one of the few zoos where the natural habitat of the residents has been painstakingly created to ensure they are comfortable in their environment.
Nandankanan, meaning “Garden of Pleasure” is perhaps the only zoo in the world where 2 tigers have voluntarily given up a life of independence for a life of captivity. Once in 1967 & again in 2013.
Among the many firsts in the country, Nandankanan opened the first White tiger safari in India that was launched in 1991. In fact, it is the host zoo for white tigers as a white tiger was born here in 1980, to normal parents. It was also the first zoo in India to be part of the prestigious World Association of Zoos & Aquariums (WAZA).
Its vast reptile collection at the special reptile park that includes endangered gharials; the wetland of Kanjia Lake, a site of national importance, its nocturnal animals section, butterfly collection and many more attractions make it the most special tourist attraction in Bhubaneswar.
