The 35-minute show at the Peace Pagoda in Dhauli, retelling the story of the war that transformed the world is a visual and auditory treat for the audience. Created by renowned Russian artist Maria Rud, and voiced in the deep baritone of Kabir Bedi in English, the evergreen Om Puri in Hindi and the versatile voice of Bijaya Mohanty in Odia, the tale is one of valour, defiance, remorse and enlightment.
The Kalinga War fought on the foothills of Dhauli, was one of the bloodiest wars in Indian history. The wanton bloodshed led to Ashoka converting to Bhuddism and the rest is history.
While the tickets for the show are priced at Rs 25 for an adult and Rs 10 for students, the experience is priceless. The white canvas of the International Peace Pagoda is transformed into a colourful, fast moving mural, with the latest 3D projection mapping technology and 5.1 Surround Sound. The show has become a major hit among tourists and is a must watch for all visitors to Bhubaneswar.
While in winter the first show starts at 6.30 pm, during summer the timing of the first show is 7 pm. This follows a second show also, but depends on the number of visitors present at the venue. The show is closed on Mondays.
